Are You Special?
Based on recent teaching I’ve heard, it feels like some Christian teachers believe that if you think you’re special, then you are taking credit away from God.
Another line of thought is that the only way to truly be humble is to think you aren’t special and if you start thinking you’re special, you have crossed a line into arrogance or taking credit from God.
Ironically, by saying and believing that we are not special, we actually take credit away from God because we are created in His very image.
It’s also ironic that we are to believe that God has a unique purpose for each one of us and that He has gifted us all differently, but we’re not special?
Why am I fighting this battle?
· Because I think it’s hard to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:31) if our view of ourselves is inaccurately demeaning.
· Because it’s hard to believe God has a purpose for my life that is unlike every other person’s purpose in some way if I don’t believe I’m special in God’s eyes. (Psalm 57:2)
· Because it feels hard to appreciate the rest of God’s creation if we think His crowning achievement in creation isn’t special. (Psalm 8)
I think it’s possible to believe we are special AND give the credit for how special we are to God.
· God knew you before He formed you in the womb…you are special. (Jer 1:5)
· God created you in His image…you are special. (Gen 1:27)
· God will finish the work He started in you…you are special (Phil 1:6)
You are special.
God said it and He doesn’t lie.
And because you are special in the eyes of your Creator, live a life that is worthy of the calling you have received
