Timeless Truth…

Today marks the anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.  I was born 5 days before JFK was assassinated and partially due to that, I grew up fascinated with the related conspiracy theories.

I could tell you who Jesse Curry was (Chief of Police of DPD) and why at least one writer suggested he was part of a conspiracy to assassinate JFK.  I had read extensively about Bobby Hargis, the motorcycle policeman hit with JFK’s blood and how the angle of the alleged shooter (Lee Harvey Oswald) could not have generated blood spatter in that direction if shooting from the TSBD (Texas School Book Depository).  I knew about the magic bullet.  I saw stills of the Zapruder film that seemed to prove a second gunman.  If I had to write a research paper in high school, it was often about the assassination of JFK.

As I look back, two things stand out to me.

·      I was more fascinated with the latest thinking than the truth

·      I believed whatever I read last

As a result, I’d fall for the theory du jour and argue it as passionately as I had argued for the theory I’d read before that.

Thankfully the truth in God’s Word does not change like shifting shadows.  God’s truth, like Jesus Himself, is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow (Heb. 13:8).  God’s Word has literally stood the test of time and it can be trusted completely.

And if, like me, you are heavily influenced by the last thing you’ve read or watched, that is another great reason to fill our minds with God’s truth from the Bible and from trusted Bible teachers so it has the biggest influence on our lives.
