Because He Said So…

Perhaps it wasn’t a great strategy, but when our kids were young, we told them we wanted them to “obey first, then ask” when we asked them to do something.  By doing that, they were respecting what we asked of them and we were respecting that they may have questions about what we were asking of them.

I hope my requests were reasonable and for their own good and that they could easily see that, but I also hoped it would build a habit of obedience even if they didn’t understand why I was asking something of them.

There will be times when God is asking something of us.  Will we obey even if we don’t fully understand why?  Will we obey even if it doesn’t make sense to us in that moment?

Luke 5:5 tells of Jesus telling Peter to let down the fishing nets after a night of unsuccessful fishing.

Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.

But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”  Luke 5:5

Because You say so…

What is Jesus asking you to do?

Is He asking for a deeper commitment to regular time with Him?  Is He asking you to serve in an area where He has also gifted you?  Is He asking you to disciple someone?  Is He asking you to pray about something that seems hopeless?  Is He asking you to trust Him in the middle of something very painful happening in your life?  Is He asking you to be vulnerable and share with someone about your hurts, habit or hang-ups?

If so, there are many reasons to say ‘yes’ and one of those, at least for now, could simply be ‘because He said so.’

Saying yes to Jesus will work out well for us as it did for Peter when he let the nets down again.

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.  Luke 5:6

Is there something God is asking you to do?
