Growing in Knowledge Without a Book…
Colossians 1:9-14 is packed but one phrase that details how we can please God stood out to me. Here’s the entire passage…
We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Right in the middle Paul writes about ‘growing in the knowledge of God’ as a way we can live a life worthy of the Lord and to please Him in every way.
More time in the Word or more time in Bible commentaries or reading books about the attributes of God would help us grow in the knowledge of God. But another way many of you reading this may already be using is to meditate on the things you already know about God and consider how meaningful those things are to you.
A few examples:
· God’s love for you is unconditional, but maybe reminding yourself that you can confess any sin in your life and He will not love you less helps you grow in your knowledge of God's unconditional love.
· God is the creator, but looking outside or watching a nature show while thinking of God’s amazing creativity may help you grow in your knowledge and appreciation that God is the creator.
· God is the provider, but perhaps thinking of all the specific things God has provided helps you grow in your knowledge of His provision
· God sent His Holy Spirit to live in you and guide you, but perhaps reflecting on how the Holy Spirit is so available and accessible and willing to give you wisdom helps you grow in your knowledge of Go
May we grow in our knowledge of God so we may have great endurance and patience and give joyful thanks to the Father, for He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in Whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
