If Not Now, When…
“I’d love to memorize dozens of Bible verses that are relevant to me about worry, avoiding temptation, God’s love for me and other practical topics that impact my life, but do you know how old I’ll be by the time I do that?”
“Yes, the same age you’ll be if you don’t memorize them.”
Disclaimer: That was not an actual conversation I experienced, but I’d hope that any one of my accountability partners would love me enough to challenge and encourage me like that if I was not doing something I knew God wanted me to do like hiding His Word in my heart.
I’m paraphrasing, but I read an ancient proverb I like that says the best time to start something for your long term good is twenty years ago and the second best time is today.
Do you have a spiritual goal you’ve been putting off perhaps because it seems unattainable or perhaps you may even think it’s too late?
Could you give it your attention for five minutes today? Don’t worry about tomorrow. Don’t worry about setting some magnificent goal of being able to look back at eighteen consecutive years of reading through the Bible in a year. Just win today.
Then just win the next day.
Perhaps it feels like this should be one of those December 31st posts encouraging a new beginning coinciding with the new year, but if you have a spiritual goal you are not working towards, why wait? Start now and get some momentum heading into the new year so that two months from now, you are living proof of the quote from Aristotle that says, “We are what we repeatedly do.”
What spiritual goal do you have that you can take action on today?
