But You Can’t Get Closer to God…

Recently I asked someone to be a prayer mentor for me and we got together for the first time this week.

He asked me to share my life story with him and he shared his with me.

He then asked why I asked to start meeting with him as my mentor so I told him I wanted to be closer to God.

Without hesitation he said, “but you can’t get closer to God.”

I’m sure my non-verbals were all flashing ‘confusion’ and he just looked at me and smiled as if he had a great secret he was about to reveal.

He then patted his own chest and said, “we can’t get closer to God because He’s already right here.”

Several thoughts ran through my mind.

I thought of a friend who shared that he didn’t feel like his prayers went past the ceiling and how this truth may comfort him by knowing that his prayers don’t have to go past the ceiling because God is already in his heart.

I thought of how months ago I changed my thinking from IMAGINING God was sitting next to me while I was praying to instead REALIZING God was sitting next to me and now how Peter blew that away with the reminder that God is in me, not next to me.

I loved what Peter said next…”When we ask Jesus into our heart, He moves into our heart literally.”

Isn’t that so great to think about!

Yes, I know Jesus lives in my heart, but it still seemed even more personal, more close to think that Jesus is literally in my heart.

“I am crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith, the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20
